Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has appointed Juan Demapan to the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents.

Demapan, in his maiden attendance at a board meeting yesterday, refused to vote on the renewal of NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez’s contract, saying he deems it improper to vote since he did not actually participate in any deliberation and evaluation of the president.

However, Demapan made a few comments during the meeting, suggesting a two-year contract for Fernandez, which was not granted in the end.

Demapan said he’s excited to sit on the NMC board for the first time.

An engineer by profession, Demapan said it is his goal to assist the college to become a better institution that would help in the development of the local workforce.

Board of Regents chair Charles Cepeda said he is counting on the “great ideas” of the new regent.

“With his abilities and great ideas…it’s a great help for the board,” Cepeda said.

Board members include Dr. Rita Inos, Elaine Orilla, Maria Malua Peter, and Janet King.

The board has one more seat to fill. (PR)
