Celis, Lebria stand out in softball league

Freedom Air’s Roy Celis and Finances Liz Lebria were busy during the awards ceremony for the Budweiser 2008-2009 Inter-Government/Business Slow-pitch Softball League Thursday at the Capital Hill Ballfield, as they won several individual awards.

Celis had the most doubles, home runs, and RBIs and to top it all, she also went home with the regular season MVP award in the men’s division.

The Freedom Air slugger made 12 doubles, 21 homers, and 58 RBIs in 19 games. He was fifth overall in the batting race after going 49-for-69 for an average of .710.

Docomo’s Payton Sakuma was the season’s batting champion with his .788 average. He hit 41-for-52 at the plate, beating Department of Community and Cultural Affair’s Julian Camacho (.727), POI’s Mabel Ngirngemelas (.720), and DCCA’s Mel Sakisat (.714).

Pete Teigita of the Department of Land and Natural Resources went home with the most triples award with six, outclassing Ben Taisacan , Ben Tagabuel, and Vinnie Sablan, who had five each.

Freedom Air’s Roque Camacho won the pitching race with his 4.64 ERA. In 14 games and 80 innings pitched, Camacho gave up 82 runs and allowed 125 hits. He had an 11-2 record in those 14 matches.

J.J. Salas was this season’s strikeouts king with 30, beating Esang Olkeriil (27), Steve Igisair (24), Sakisat (23), Leo Bobai (22), and Ruben Olkeriil (21).

In the women’s division, Lebria had to return to home plate to receive multiple trophies. She was named batting race queen and topped the runs scored, and home runs categories.

Lebria went 28-for-42 at bat for an average of .667. She had 23 runs scored, edging Lillian Aguon (22), Felisa Brel (20), Lenice Kapileo (20), Bert Camacho (19), and Kuki Pangelinan (19).

The Finance outfielder tied four others in the most home runs scored with 12. Lebria was in the company of Bert Camacho, Angie Ngribedul, Pangelinan, and Pauline Tudela.

Lebria took her fourth trophy when she was named regular season MVP.

Also taking home multiple trophies was Tudela. The Finance player topped the triples (11) and RBIs (23) categories. NMC’s Pangelinan led in doubles (3), while DCCA’s Eula Matsumoto ruled the strikeouts competition with 24.

Finance’s Bego Camacho prevailed in the pitching race, posting 2.60 ERA. She pitched 71 innings in 11 games and had a 7-4 record. Bego gave up 91 runs and allowed 125 hits.

Joining the regular season awardees were DCCA’s Julian Camacho and Brel, who were adjudged Finals MVP after leading their team’s to the championship in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
