Lady Knights end SIS’ 3-year reign
Mt. Carmel School ended Saipan International School ’s reign following a 36-32 finals win in the girls division of the 2009 Coalition of Private Schools on Saipan Basketball League yesterday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Lady Geckos ruled the league for three straight seasons and threatened a fourth when they launched a late rally in the fourth quarter before the Lady Knights held on in the last one minute of the game.
After leading by as much as 13 points (32-19) at the start of the fourth quarter, Mt. Carmel sensed trouble in the last two minutes of the match. SIS moved within four, 30-34, after an Annie Camacho basket, with 1:46 left in the game.
The Lady Geckos had a chance to inch in closer when they stole the ball from Mt. Carmel and Zoe Jewell was fouled on her way to the basket. But Jewell missed both charities.
In the next MCS offensive set, point guard Nicolle Lebria wisely used the clock before pulling up for a 10-footer and making the basket to widen the Lady Knights lead, 36-30, with less than a minute remaining in the fourth period.
SIS cut the lead to four, anew, on an Amber Roberts’ basket, but the Lady Geckos ran out of time, ending their three-year reign in the league.
Mt. Carmel, which topped the regular season, dictated the tempo of the game early, taking a 19-13 lead at the end of the first period.
Noelle Calvo led MCS’ good start, nailing eight points, while siblings Nicolle and Kaylani Lebria combined for nine points. Michelle Burger scored the other two points for MCS in the first canto.
Maya Oestreich was the lone SIS player to tally more than one field goal for the Lady Geckos and things turned from bad to worse for the dethroned champions when they made only a point in the second quarter.
At halftime, the Lady Knights’ lead ballooned to 11 points, 25-14, and they tasted their biggest lead at the end of the third with the Lebria sisters and Calvo taking charge.
