Article 12 in today’s Chamber meeting
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce will hold its general membership meeting today, May 6, 2009, at the Saipan Grand Hotel’s Seaside Hall, with Rep. Ramon Tebuteb as the guest speaker.
Tebuteb will present some alternative thoughts about the Article XII issue. The Chamber in its last meeting hosted the group Citizens for Change to Article 12, which is pushing for the abolition of Article 12 in 2011.
Section 805 of the Covenant allows the CNMI to revisit its land alienation restrictions 25 years after the termination of the Trusteeship Agreement in 1986. That 25-year period will end in 2011.
“We believe it is important that the public understand all sides of this important issue,” said Kyle Calabrese, Chamber executive director.
Registration and lunch will begin at 11:30am, and the meeting will begin at noon. As usual, the meeting is $15 for members, $20 for guests of members, and $25 for general public.
“We will also present the recipients of the Chamber’s two scholarships for Northern Marianas Trades Institute’s students. Please be sure to join us and congratulate these two individuals,” said Calabrese. (SCC)
