The CNMI Public School System was recently honored for its support of teacher-soldiers during the first-ever recognition awarding rites held by the Employer Support for the Guards and Reserve.

PSS Education Commissioner Dr. Rita A. Sablan, along with other Commonwealth educators, received the award in a ceremony held Saturday at the Guam Marriott.

A total of 27 employers and individuals were recognized and honored for their support to employees affiliated with the U.S. Armed Forces, such as those in the reserves and National Guard.

PSS, with the help of the federal government, has been successfully helping the islands’ reservists and returning soldiers by employing them as teacher assistants through the AmeriCorps program.

While helping to improve student learning in the classrooms, these “employees” are also entitled to continue and obtain their degrees in the Northern Marianas College.

According to Sablan, two other CNMI employers got the award: the Commonwealth Ports Authority and the Department of Public Safety.

CPA was among the employers who got the highest recognition, according to Rose Igitol, committee member of the Guam-CNMI ESGR.

The awarding is being planned to become an annual event for ESGR.
