The 3rd Annual Spearfishing Tournament organized by the Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club is fast approaching and those interested have until this Saturday, May 9, to cast their entries.

MASC president Morito Asai said would-be participants can submit their entries no later than 5pm this Saturday at his Aquasmith Dive Shop in Garapan.

Participants from Tinian, Rota, Guam, or other island residents can also send their entries through e-mail (dive@aquasmith.com) and payments can be made a day before the tournament.

Asai earlier announced that the 3rd Annual Spearfishing Tournament will be held on May 16 with participants’ launching point at the Smiling Cove Marina.

The tournament starts at 6am and last until 4pm with no limitation on the area of coverage. The spearfishing area includes Tinian or Goat Island, except sanctuary and dive spots, and the Banzai Cliff area.

Categories to be contested are biggest fish (first prize only) and total weight, which includes individual (first to third) and team (first to 10th places). The MASC president said there would be no fish category this year to minimize the time for weigh-ins.

Asai said MASC will only accept a catch that is at least 11 lbs. The entry fee per person is $50.

Last year, Guam’s Mike Genereaux won the tournament by topping the individual total weight category, while Scott Moen of Rota won the biggest fish category.

About 40 divers joined the tournament submitting a variety of fish including parrot, trivally, rudder, black snapper, sweetlips, unicorn or tataga, grouper, emperor, and goat fish in different sizes.
