Winners in IT&E badminton doubles cited
Northern Marianas Badminton Federation handed out medals to the Top 3 placers in the 2009 IT&E Badminton Doubles Tournament during the awards ceremony Sunday night at Shirley’s Coffee Shop in Susupe.
Receiving their hardware after the seven-weekend tournament were Men’s A champions Macoi Aguda and Saul Gargallo. Hapi Gabriel, who hosted the awards ceremony, and Robert Reyes settled for silver medals after losing to Aguda and Gargallo in the finals, 21-15, 21-9. Completing the Top 3 finish in the centerpiece Men’s A division were bronze medalists Lito Mendoza and Joseph Santos.
In the Men’s B division, the gold medals went to Daniel Macario and Jorge Olanda, who pulled off an upset over the then undefeated Mario Diola and Paul Navarro, 21-19, 21-16, 21-18. Edwin Maratas and Afred Acosta took the third place medals after beating the pair of Jojo Savellano and Noli Santos, 20-22, 21-10, 21-19.
In the Men’s C division, youth player Frank Villagomez teamed up with Rick Brien to top Arnel Banzagale and Luis Camacho, 21-14, 14-21, 21-14, and get the gold medals. The duo of Puy Macario and Chris Hilario settled for bronze.
In the women’s division, Ingrid Sanchez and Cristy Villaflor and Annette Quiamba and Irene Santiago claimed gold medals in the B and C divisions, respectively.
Sanchez and Villaflor swept Marylyn Montano and Cheng Saturno in the finals, 23-21, 21-16, while Annarose Omori and Malou Malasarte prevailed in the third place game against the pair of Shirley Kim and Angie Ito, 21-16, 21-16.
Quiambao and Santiago took the women’s C division tiara following their 21-13, 22-20 win over Hazel dela Santa and Dorie Pineda. Ruby Gozon and Jenine Savellano finished third.
NMBF also handed out three special awards with Roger Vales receiving the NMBF Honorary Award for his commitment and contribution to the association and its program. Kim, who is also NMBF’s president, took the Sportsmanship Award, while youth player Daniel Macario was awarded the Most Promising Player plum.
Aguda, the tournament director, on behalf of NMBF thanked IT&E for donating the medals and for their other contributions to the success of the inaugural event.
