GOP wants ‘accord’ between primary bets
CNMI Republican Party vice chair Sharlene Babauta yesterday disclosed that it will require all candidates in the primary to sign an agreement that they will give way to whoever wins the primary polls this June.
She said the tandems of Juan N. Babauta and Galvin Deleon Guerrero and Heinz Hofschneider and Arnold Palacios will face off in a morning meeting today to discuss the agreement.
The two are seeking the party’s endorsement for the November election. A primary has been set in June to determine who among the two teams will be the party’s standard bearer.
Sharlene Babauta said that nothing so far has been agreed upon by both camps.
“We need to discuss it with them…and we’re hoping to come up with an agreement signed by both teams that whoever wins the party’s endorsement, the other would give their full support,” she told Saipan Tribune.
She refused to comment on the possibility of the losing team choosing to run as independent candidates.
“The objective of the [face-off] is to make sure that one could get the other’s support whatever the result of the primary election will be,” she said.
The local party will hold the primary election on June 27. It will not include off-island and absentee voters, mainly due to the cost of sending the ballots to them.
She said since the beginning of the local party’s primary, off-island voters were never included.
