Pangelinan sizzles as Hustlers rout D-9ers

John Pangelinan stood his ground at the mound and contributed on offense, too to power the Hustlers to a 12-2 route over the San Roque D-9ers in the Big League Division of the 2009 Saipan Little League Thursday night at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

Pangelinan pitched almost perfectly, giving up only a single to E.J. Tenorio in the top of the first inning.

Tenorio tripled and drove Chad Atalig home then the former scored on a sacrifice fly by David Camacho and the D-9ers had a 2-0 lead with one out. After that, Pangelinan allowed only Rudolpho King to advance on a base-on-ball before the former grounded the latter to second base on a 1-6 play.

Pangelinan struck out nine batters after five complete innings, lifting the Hustlers to a 10-run mercy rule victory. He went 3-for-5 at bat and had three runs and an RBI.

After the D-9ers scored two runs, the Hustlers, retaliated with five runs in the bottom of the first to seize control of the game.

Anthony Aldan and Pangelinan scored on pass balls, Vicente Leon Guerrero stole home plate, Giovanni Ayuyu reached home on an Anthony Rogolofoi single, and John Paul Lizama’s triple drove Luis Arriola home.

Pangelinan scored the lone run in the second inning on a pass ball, while Lizama, Marvin Kaipat, and Pangelinan had one RBI singles apiece for the Hustlers in the third, bringing home Arriola, Vince Cepeda, and Kaipat.

The Hustlers added two more runs via RBI singles in the fourth and Leon Guerrero tripled to send Pangelinan home in the fifth. The Hustlers gained their third straight win this season, and only first against the D-9ers this year. The D-9ers and Hustlers’ first meeting on March 24 was rained out.

The Hustlers now hold a 4-2 record and are tied with the Tanapag Falcons for second place. Ol’Aces are leading the Big League Division with their 5-2 slate.

The D’9ers suffered their first back-to-back losses this season and are now tied with Aztecs with their identical 2-3 marks. The D-9ers will try to bounce back when they meet the IT&E Fielders (1-5) tomorrow.
