Oleai Elementary School captured the girls championship of the 2009 Elementary School Interscholastic Basketball Tournament after beating San Vicente Elementary School, 13-7, in the finals last Saturday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The win was sweet revenge for Oleai after losing to San Vicente in the elimination round.

A total of six teams participated in this second edition of the annual tournament. The other schools that fielded teams were Tanapag Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School, Kagman Elementary School, and William S. Reyes Elementary School.

Tanapag defeated Kagman, 16-7, in the battle for third.

All six teams went through a single-round robin elimination format.

Organizers added all the scores of each team in its five games of the elimination and the top two teams—Oleai (52 points) and San Vicente (48 points)—automatically advanced to the finals. No. 3 Kagman (46 points) and No. 4 Tanapag (42 points) played for third place.

Oleai won its first three games against Kagman (7-6), WSR (8-2), and GTC (21-1), but lost its last two games to San Vicente (4-9) and Tanapag (12-15).

San Vicente also won three against Tanapag (9-5), GTC (12-8), and Oleai (9-4), but lost two games to Kagman (14-15) and WSR (4-15).

Kagman had the best record at 4-1, losing only once in its first game against Oleai (6-7) and won its next four games over Tanapag (9-7), San Vicente (15-14), WSR (5-3), and GTC (11-7).

Overall tournament coordinator Sam Joyner said the purpose of the one-day event is to assist in the mission of developing student athletes into future leaders through the basketball program.

“Our athletic program teaches life’s most important lessons to our students—sportsmanship, dedication, teamwork, respect for others, and respect for themselves,” Joyner said.

He thanked the parents who provided transportation for the kids the officers and members of the parent/teacher association for their continued support.

The boys tournament will be held on April 18, also at the MHS Gym.

“For the first time we will have an all-star game and a shootout that will show off players’ individual skills on May 2,” he added.
