Santa Rita, Guam—Joint Region Marianas sailors and civilian employees volunteered last Saturday to refurbish i-Recyle recycling bins at the Ambros parking lot in Anigua.

Non-profit organization i-Recycle is an aluminum recycling program created by seven local companies to promote recycling for financial benefit of the public schools. Each of the 40 public schools has one bin at their school. Cash generated from the cans collected by students goes back to the schools. The disbursements to the schools are based on the volume each school has generated.

Program administrator Peggy Denney says the bin refurbishing project will take several weeks, adding that volunteers help expedite the project. Sailors assisted by water blasting, applying rust treatment, and painting.

This volunteer work is part of the Navy’s commitment to build and harbor strong and lasting relationships with the community and support the island through various community relations projects and events. (PR)
