Ford Rangers defeated the Falcons, 8-7, but not before foiling a late rally last Wednesday night in the 2009 Budweiser Saipan Major League at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

After the Ford Rangers erected a huge 8-0 lead, seven of them in the bottom of the third, the Falcons made the match interesting with four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning.

Jess Taitano sparked the Falcons’ rally with a two-run single followed by a two-run double by B.J. Sablan.

The Falcons scored two more runs, as J.D. Dikito crossed home plate on a Nunu Kapileo double and Kapileo himself reached home on a pass ball to make it 6-8.

Starting pitcher Craig Sanchez gave up three more hits before Franco Flores relieved him with no out in the top of the eighth inning.

Kapileo doubled to send J.R. Suel home and the Falcons moved to within a run of the Joeten Motors-sponsored team’s lead.

Flores got the second out on Dikito following a 6-4 play and Ned Norita was retired on a flyout to shortstop for the third out, as the Rangers preserved the win, their fifth in six outings this season.

The Rangers at 5-1 now join the D-9ers on top, while the Falcons suffered their third setback in six outings.

D-9ers smothered the Young Guns, 13-3, on Monday night for their third consecutive victory, as they momentarily seized the solo lead before the Rangers tied them, two days later.

Both D-9ers and Young Guns have finished their first round assignments.

The Young Guns are still winless after five matches with four playing dates left in the first round of the regular season.

Jonathan Tenorio and Paul Camacho pitched in the D-9ers’ overpowering win against the slumping Young Guns.

In offense, the D-9ers made a total of 13 hits and nine RBIs to complete the rout.

Defending champion Rock Steady (4-1) will take on Korean Phoenix (0-3) in tonight’s game.

A total of four games are left before the start of the second round, including the rained out game between Phoenix and Young Guns originally scheduled last March 23.
