Commonwealth Utilities Corp. boosted its playoff bid with an upset victory over Finance, 17-13, last Monday night in the women’s division of the 2009 Budweiser Inter-Government/Business Slow-pitch Softball League at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

CUC capitalized on an early 9-2 lead after only two and a half innings to close out its regular season assignment with a 7-5 record, tying Finance.

But CUC will occupy the No. 2 spot in the playoffs behind pennant winner Northern Marianas College (10-2) by virtue of the winner-over-the-other rule.

Finance will take the No. 3 slot, while defending champion Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will be No. 4.

Claire Cabian went 5-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs, and a triple, while Bobbie Norita had four RBIs on 2-for-5 at bat with a run.

Both made 18 hits with CUC coming in with 14 RBIs as against Finance’s 13.

Julie Guerrero went 3-for-3 for Finance, with four RBIs, a run and a triple, while Pauline Tudela was 2-for-2 with two runs, two triples, and four RBIs.

Winning pitcher Dolorina Panuelo issued four strikeouts, gave up 18 hits, a walk, a double, and four triples. At bat, Panuelo managed to hit 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Losing pitcher Bego Camacho had one strikeout, two triples, 14 RBIs, and a walk, and allowed 18 hits.

CUC made two runs in the top of the first inning from leadoff batter Mel Benjamin on a single by Norita, who then reached home on another single by Mel Camacho.

The league’s batting leader Liz Lebria gave Finance its first run on a single by Pauline Tudela and followed by Lilian Aguon’s run on Julie Guerrero’s triple that tied the score at 2-2.

But CUC made seven runs of six hits, including an RBI single by Benjamin, two RBI single by Norita, another RBI single by Mel Camacho, and a two RBI single by Panuelo, in the second inning.

Benjamin scored his third consecutive run on a fielding error and CUC led at 10-2.

Finance moved to within two runs by coming in with four runs in the third and two in the fourth when CUC came up with four more in the fifth, and never looked back.
