“4S Charming” is how the Chinese Tourism TV channel is touting the sky, sea, and sand of Saipan in a two-hour special on the Northern Marian Islands.

An eight-member production team of the tourism channel explored the islands of Saipan and Tinian on March 17-21, 2009, to produce a broadcast for airing in April 2009. The program will be divided into five-minute segments throughout the month, airing on the station’s tourism channel targeting 500,000 viewers in 20 cities, largely middle-class travelers and families.

“We believe that every inch of the film negative will reflect the beauty of CNMI: the sky, the sea, the sand and Saipan will be combined into the slogan ‘4S Charming’ to our viewers,” said program director Huang Heqiang through a translator. “The most impressive is the hospitality of the people.”

On Saipan the media group visited diving hot spot Grotto; Laolao Bay Golf Resort; Bird Island Lookout, home to hundreds of seabirds; World War II historic sites Banzai Cliff and the Last Command Post. Snorkeling, a banana boat ride and parasailing were enjoyed, as well as a sunset dinner cruise in Saipan’s lagoon. The team also took a jungle tour and explored shopping opportunities at DFS Galleria.

“Saipan has been famous since 2008, when more and more advertising and exposure occurred [in our region],” said Huang Heqiang. “Saipan has also gained high-ranking in reputation and travel desire. That is also one of the reasons we came.”

On Tinian, the team visited Taga Latte Stone Park where limestone monoliths carved by ancient indigenous Chamorros still stand. World War II historic sites, the scenic Blow Hole, and local trolling were also filmed.

“People are crazy about tropical island trips,” the director added. “Due to China’s strong economic status and growth of income, people are more willing to go for quality travel. Their definition of quality measures nature resources, hotel standards, food and beverage, shopping variety and quantity of activities.”

Marianas Visitors Authority assisted with the production arrangements. The media tour was organized and co-sponsored by Tinian Dynasty Holidays.

“We were very pleased to assist with this production,” said MVA managing director Perry Tenorio. “China has proven a strong source market for our islands in the past, and we will continue to welcome visitors from China as long as possible.” (MVA)
