Diamond shines, Quichocho upsets Ol’Aces
Diamond Auto Care and Quichocho Law Office showed poise in the fourth quarter to outclass separate foes in the 2008-2009 BANMI/Budweiser Basketball League Wednesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Diamond dropped a 14-4 bomb in more than five minutes in the fourth quarter to thwart the Runnin’ Rebels, 81-74, in the second game. In the curtain raiser, Quichocho outgunned the Ol’Aces in the stretch to nail a 91-82 triumph.
The Runnin’ Rebels were still ahead by a hair, 65-64, with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter, when Diamond worked its way back into the game.
Elmer Esdrelon, Errol Peredo and Dick Brostrom scored in succession, while Jawn Joyner drilled four straight points to give Diamond a 75-65 lead, with 3:45 left in the game.
Jose Tumaquip broke the Runnin’ Rebels’ silence with a long jumper, but Errol Peredo countered with a triple to keep Diamond’s double digit lead, 78-67, going into the last three minutes of the match.
The Runnin’ Rebels scored one more basket on a Sylvan Teregeyo layup, but went cold again for more than a minute before Bob Coldeen Jr. canned a triple, with 36 seconds of the game and with Diamond safely ahead, 80-72.
Esdrelon scored 17 points for Diamond, which improved to a 5-5 record for solo fourth place in the team standings.
The Runnin’ Rebels are still in the cellar with a 2-9 slate.
