On March 4, 2009, four Tinian Fire Department personnel—Ike Kiyoshi, Rudy Santos, Jack Reyes and Mario Cruz—conducted a two-day Emergency Preparedness Workshop at the Tinian Elementary School campus. The workshop was in compliance with the PSS Strategic Priority for a Safe and Orderly School.

During the first day the DPS officers visited classrooms where they discussed preparing an emergency kit, creating an emergency plan and knowing the facts about how to react in an emergency. Afterwards, the children enjoyed touring the EMS and Fire Department vehicles that were on display.

On the second day, Ike Kiyoshi and Heinz Hofschneider conducted earthquake “Stop, Drop and Cover” exercises from classroom to classroom. A surprise fire drill added reality to the workshop. It took less than three minutes to evacuate all teachers and students from their classrooms and have them assembled in temporary holding areas. It took less than five minutes for the fire trucks and their personnel to arrive at the TES campus and less than 10 minutes to account for all students who had come to school that day.

The staff and faculty at Tinian Elementary School were very thankful to fireman Kiyoshi for coordinating the two-day event. (PR)
