Just two days after submitting her resignation letter to the governor, Agnes McPhetres has rescinded her decision and submitted a new letter to the Board of Regents, canceling her first letter.

Board of Regents chair Charles V. Cepeda yesterday said that McPhetres turned in the “rescinded” version last Monday. The former NMC president resigned Friday, March 6.

Cepeda said the board has yet to act on McPhetres’ request to return to the board.

“As of the moment, the board has yet to meet and decide on her letter rescinding her decision. It’s up to the board to accept it or not,” he told Saipan Tribune.

As for McPhetres’ current status, Cepeda admitted that he could not consider her a member of the board without the regents first acting on the issue.

“As a chair, I can’t say directly at this moment on her status…because no action has been taken by the board,” he said. “We need to wait for the board’s decision.”

McPhetres had disclosed in her letter to the governor that she’s quitting the post due to several issues within the college, mostly pertaining to the college president’s management style and operations.

She had earlier cited that she has lost faith and confidence in the capability of the current NMC president, Dr. Carmen Fernandez, to lead the institution, especially in this critical time for its accreditation.

McPhetres was the longest serving president of NMC before becoming a board member. She was appointed by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial to the post and has been in the position for less than a year.

Cepeda described yesterday as “serious” the reasons cited by McPhetres in her resignation letter, which also indicated an incident where the board allegedly “grilled” her over unfounded accusations that she instigated and attended a meeting of a group of faculty and administrators who are dissatisfied with the president’s performance.

Currently, the seven-member board has six members, including McPhetres.

Cepeda declined to comment when asked for the reasons that McPhetres cited in rescinding her resignation.

However, he said the letter did not mention anything about a wish by the governor for her to stay on.
