Lady Eagles, Knights advance to finals
Grace Christian Academy and Mt. Carmel School ousted their respective opponents in the semifinals last Tuesday to arrange a championship duel in the girls division of the 2009 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association basketball league.
The GCA Lady Eagles coasted to an easy 32-11 win over Seventh Day Adventist, while the Lady Knights squeaked past Saipan Community School, 32-18, before screaming fans at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Eagles and the Knights will meet for the title today following the battle for third place between SDA and the SCS Tsunamis.
Undefeated in 10 straight games, GCA will be highly favored against Mt. Carmel, having won all three of their meetings in the regular season.
The Lady Eagles swept their regular season games, 9-0, while the Lady Knights finished with a 6-3 win-loss card.
Kallie O’Connor and Chezka De Luna led the Lady Eagles with six points each, while Julie Muna, Christine Molina, and Crista Cristobal had four apiece. Angeline Velasco, Angela Mamaril, Abby Dimaano, and Anastasia Schweger added two each.
GCA limited SDA to a single point after three quarters and it was just a matter of time for the Lady Eagles to take the game away with a 24-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Danessa Taylor was the lone SDA player to score from the stripe late in the first quarter.
The team managed to squeeze 10 points in the fourth, six from Jacinia Richards, two each from Erin Belle Mendiola and Dana Kim.
SDA absorbed its 10th defeat in as many games.
The Knights stretched a 22-13 halftime lead with a 28-15 count at the end of the third quarter and limited the Tsunamis on the way to an easy win. SCS was 3-6 in the regular season.
