Isn’t it time?

On Feb. 14 and again on the 16th, Judge Govendo cited that the “Retirement Fund issue is a Commonwealth problem.” I agree 100 percent that it is a problem. It’s been on the paper saying that in three to five years, the Fund will run out of money. For as long as the government does not put in its share, the Fund will be broke by then. I too agree with Judge Govendo that the Legislature should be involved.

To all active members and retirees, are you not concerned about your investment, the deductions from your hard earned cash? If you are, then let’s organize ourselves and form an “Active and Retirees Association of the CNMI” to include our neighbor islands of Rota and Tinian. Why is it important to have an organization? Because as an organization and as members of the Retirement Fund program, our concerns can be heard, we will know exactly what is going on with the program, we can have a voice in determining who can representing our interest on the board and not just their own. I believe that board members should be anybody who is a contributing member to the Fund.

So to all active members (4,000 strong) and retirees (over 2,500 strong), let’s organize and let them hear our concerns. Let’s have a voice in the Board. After all, as members (both active and retirees), we own a majority of the funds. Members have been contributing for years and yet, no one really represents us when it comes to our interest. To all who believe, that we should organize and create an Active and Retirees Association, please email me at joe.m.palacios@gmail.com.
