A new nine-classroom building is expected to open soon at Marianas High School compound following completion of the project this week.

MHS principal Karen Borja yesterday said that facility will be ready for occupancy in the next two weeks after the completion of electrical connections Wednesday.

The new facility is the replacement for the old dilapidated Building J, which the students abandoned during the opening of school year due to its worst condition.

“We’re very happy that electricity was finally switched on last Wednesday and we’re expecting to get next week our certificate of occupancy so we can move in,” she told Saipan Tribune Friday.

The school was supposed to use the facility last school opening but due to construction delay, it was postponed.

Borja said the new classrooms will house three special education classes, cooperative education, and five classes for freshmen students.

She estimated that about 225 students will be housed at the new wing in a daily basis.

“These students are currently holding classes in our Building H and we were forced to use our conference room and other vacant spaces. We’re hoping to relocate them in next two weeks,” she said.

The funding for the new building was sourced from a community development block grant approved by the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. which appropriated $900,000 including collateral equipment for the facility.

The construction and renovation of the old Building J was delayed for many years due to funding concerns of public school system.

It was supposed to be funded under the compact-impact fund which has been reprogrammed by the administration to other purposes.
