The Department of Corrections has tapped eight inmates to conduct community beautification projects at the beach sites on Saipan.

Under the supervision of DOC officers, the inmates have been trimming the grass, picking up the trash, and raking the leaves along the beach sides.

DOC Officer Arnold Seman told Saipan Tribune that the department started the beautification project for the prisoners to give back community services and also part of their rehabilitation.

“They’re going out and sharing their time doing something to benefit the public,” Seman said.

A couple of weeks ago, the inmates completed a weeklong clean up at Obyan Beach.

“When people go back there now (at Obyan Beach) to have picnics on weekends, it’s very clean. We did a lot of bush cutting. We widened the road by the park area,” he said.

From Obyan Beach, the inmates conducted the cleanup from the beach sides of Chalan Kanoa all the way up to Susupe. Their final target is Micro Beach.

Over the last few months, DOC also utilized inmates to paint the school bus stops on the island. But vandals spray-painted many newly repainted bus stops with the word Xenocide and other words.
