Lady Ayuyus make MISO final
Kagman High School booked the first finals ticket in the girls varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League after whipping Mt. Carmel School in the semifinals, 64-40, Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The victory earned the Lady Ayuyus a return trip to the finals against the winner of the Lady Dolphins-Lady Rays playoff match.
MHS and Saipan Southern High School will square off for the second finals seat tomorrow with the former aiming for a rematch against the defending champion Lady Ayuyus.
Kagman was pitted against Mt. Carmel in the semifinals after the Lady Ayuyus finished second in the regular season with their 4-2 record. The Lady Knights were seeded third collecting two wins in six games.
The Lady Ayuyus swept the Lady Knights in the regular season, winning by 10 points in their first meeting, 52-42, and by 32 markers in the second round, 58-26.
The third outing had another lopsided results, as the Lady Knights kept pace with the Lady Ayuyus only in the first quarter.
With Noelle Calvo firing nine points in the opening period, the Lady Knights were behind by only three, 13-16, after the first eight minutes of the game.
But that was the closest that Mt. Carmel could get, as it was an all Kagman show in the last three quarters.
Mercedez Mesa, Dion Diaz, and Stacie Mizutani combined for 12 of Kagman’s 16 points in the second quarter, while Yvonne Bennett and Agatha Repeki chipped in three and two, respectively, giving the Lady Ayuyus a 32-21 halftime lead.
Only Calvo and Nicole Lebria scored for MCS in the second and third quarters before Amanda Tudela and Taylor Ada added two points apiece in the fourth quarter.
In contrast, the Lady Ayuyus drew contributions from every player coach Francis San Nicolas fielded in the second half.
Bennett piled up 12 more in the second half, three other players nailed four each, and three more Lady Ayuyus scored two apiece.
Bennett paced the Ayuyus with 16 markers, while Mesa and Repeki finished with 14 and 10, respectively.
Calvo led all scorers with 20 points, while Lebria had 14.
