Patriots debut with easy win against Red Sox
The powerhouse Patriots won their debut in the Junior League after walloping the Red Sox, 13-4, yesterday in the 2009 Saipan Little League Baseball at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
Champions for the last three years in the Major League, the Patriots moved up an age group this year and have established themselves as one of the early favorites in the Senior League.
“We don’t really know our chances. This is our first time in the Juniors but we will do our best,” said team manager Thelma Mizer minutes after the game.
Mizer’s coaching staff includes Major League holdover Manny Sablan and newcomer William Camacho.
The Patriots, however, face an acid test in its next assignment when it takes on defending champion Kagman Lion Heart.
But Mizer said they have been preparing hard for this season.
“We are an all-around team. I think we have a strong defense. It’s all about teamwork,’ she said.
Franklin Santos led the Patriots’ in offense with four runs, Christian Mizer scored three, Jeremy Rabauliman and Bryan Camacho added two each, while Austin Lizama and Henry Rabauliman had one each.
The Patriots joined opening day winner San Roque D’9ers, who won via forfeit against Fielders.
The opening game in the Juniors League between Kagman Lion Heart and Ol’Aces ended in a 5-5 count, but the game was called off due to time constraints.
That game will be played at a later date.
Jets 5, Fielders 4
Also on Sunday, the Jets prevailed over the Fielders, 4-3, in a defense-oriented encounter in the Senior League.
This game went into extra innings as both teams ended in a 3-3 all count after seven innings of play.
Outfielder Thomas Camacho, who had one run in the seventh, made the decisive run in the ninth for the Jets.
Henry Nakayama also finished with two runs in the second and sixth, while Eli Aughenbaugh had one in the sixth.
Fielders third baseman Jonathan Celis scored in the bottom of first to give his team an early lead. Noki Saralu and Jo Sablan each scored in the sixth, while Tom Agulto tied it at 4-all in the seventh to force overtime.
