NMA finally fetes All Schools winners
Outstanding athletes in the 2008 McDonald’s All Schools Championships finally received their overdue trophies during the Northern Marianas Athletics Annual Awards Banquet at Minatchom Atdao Pavilion last week.
“It’s better late than never,” said NMA secretary general/treasurer Robin Sapong.
NMA president Kurt Barnes apologized for the delay, as they were busy preparing for the Oceania Grand Prix Series and Oceania Area Championships, which Saipan hosted in June last year.
The All Schools meet was held in May and featured athletes in the elementary, middle school, and high school competing in field and running events.
NMA was able to award team trophies to various schools, but failed to give awards to individual performers.
Ten individuals were named top performers in the All Schools meet.
The 8-and-under division had Whispering Palms’ Neghar Rastguiy, who won in the 800m and 1,500m races, and Dandan Elementary School’s Maxten Doone, who ruled the 100m and 200m races, and softball throw.
The top performers in the 10-and-under division were Gabrielle Race of Whispering Palms and Jesse Brel of Kagman Elementary School.
Race won the 400m and 800m races in the All Schools, while Brel triumphed in the 100m, 200m, and 800m runs.
Ilia Corella of Whispering Palms and Joshua Trinidad of San Vicente Elementary School were named best athletes in the 12-and-under division. Corella prevailed in the 200m and 400m runs and placed third in the long jump in the All Schools.
Lia Rangamar of Grace Christian Academy and Brandon Phillip of Hopwood Junior High earned the top athletes plum in the 14-and-under age group.
Rangamar was first in 200m and 400m races, discus throw, and javelin throw, while Phillip triumphed in the 100m and 200m runs, and long jump.
The top athletes in the 18-and-under division were all from Kagman—Yvonne Bennett and Jesus Iguel.
Bennett made record-breaking runs in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, while Iguel won the 100m and 200m races, long jump, and javelin throw.
NMA thanked McDonald’s owner Jo Ayuyu for his continued support for the All Schools meet.
