Kagman Little Lions nipped As Matuis Twins, 9-8, in the second day of action in the 2009 Saipan Little League Baseball Association yesterday of at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Pangelinan Ballfield.

With the win, the Little Lions joined three other teams in the Major Division that also won their first assignments in opening day held Sunday, including Hustlers, Red Sox, and Ol’Aces.

Jon Santos led the Little Lions’ offense with a run in the first, third, and sixth, while Roke Tenorio also had three runs for the Twins.

Coach Wally Emul said his players have improved a lot.

“We’ve been hitting good. Our defense was also good. We work hard to make things happen,” he said, who also handles the defending champion Lion Heart in the Junior Division and the Lion King in the Senior Division.

Their next assignment will be against the Survivors on Saturday.

Emul said the Ol’Aces would be the team to beat this season.

His prediction came true after the Ol’Aces proved their dominance in their first game of the season.

Ol’Aces blanked Survivors, 11-0, on Sunday in an abbreviated match due to the 10-run rule.

Nathan Torres stepped at home plate three times to lead Ol’Aces’ offensive juggernaut, one each in the third, fourth, and fifth, as they needed only five innings in the seven-inning match-up to finish off the Survivors.

The game was close after two innings, but Ol’Aces busted out in the third courtesy of plate-crossings by Jon Santos, Garon Borja, and Jesse Brel.

Ol’Aces scored three more in the fourth and six in the fifth for the outright win.

Pitcher Jeremy Lizama struck out a total of 12 batters as only one Survivor was able to advance to first base on a walk.

Red Sox also marched to victory after a dominating 9-1 win over the Tanapag Braves.

Red Sox pitchers Alex Monkeya and Keene Guerrero issued a total of 11 strikeouts against the Braves.

Jose Tyquiengco led the offense with three runs, Nathan Sablan and Monkeya had two each, while Ryan Aguon, Jonathan Camacho, and Jean Aguon added one each.

Only Ked Kalen reached home plate for the Braves in the bottom fourth.

Hustlers also won over the Dragons, 7-4.

Three other games were played yesterday—A’s vs. Team Shell, Team IT&E vs. Jets, and JPO Enforcers vs. Little Falcons—but results were not available as of press time.
