An unoccupied house in Afetnas was intentionally set on fire by an unidentified person or persons last week, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.

DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said nobody was reported injured and no one has been arrested yet.

Ogumoro said that last Thursday, Feb. 5, at 6:53pm, DPS received a report of a structure fire in the Afetnas area.

According to preliminary investigation, Ogumoro said, the blaze fully engulfed the house and its roof had already collapsed by the time firefighters arrived.

“Suppression was immediately commenced upon the arrival of Tanke-1, bringing the fire under control at 7:25pm,” she said.

Based on the findings of arson investigators, the house was intentionally burned, Ogumoro said.

“This case is pending further investigation. The owner of the house, Ms. Remedio T. Nakatsukasa, is reportedly off-island,” Ogumoro said.

Ogumoro did not mention in her report the type of the affected house. She also did not say why DPS released the information to the media only yesterday.
