The NMIVA Two-man Beach Volleyball League kicked off Wednesday night on the Pacific Islands Club sand court with eight teams joining the Marianas Cup tune-up competition.

Participating teams were divided into two pools and will play a round robin in regulation. But tournament organizer Russ Quinn said interested teams can still register and start playing next week.

The last three playing days of the month-long league will be on Feb. 18, 25, and March 4. Games are played from 5pm to 9pm.

The league aims to prepare beach volleyball players on Saipan for the 17th Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival, which will run from March 6 to 8.

The Marianas Cup will have Saipan players battling pros from the U.S., Korea, and Japan.

Pool A is composed of the tandems of Rob Epley-Rob Jordan, Jess Palacios-Jonas Barcinas, Marino and Derrick Pungilug, and Tyce Mister-Chris Nelson.

Pool B has the duos of Dan Westphal-Luther Taylor, Larry Sharry and Jazz Roscow, Quinn-Bruce Berline, and Scott Eck and a certain Leo.

Three games were played in Pool A with the pairs of Palacios and Barcinas splitting their first two matches.

The tandem of Palacios and Barcinas won over Jordan and Epley, 21-7, but the first pair bowed to Mister and Nelson, 11-21, in the third match.

In Pool B, Sharry and Roscow had a 2-0 start after topping Taylor and Westphal, 21-17, and downing Quinn and Berline, 21-15.

Taylor and Westphal recovered and improved to a 1-1 record after defeating Quinn and Berline, 21-18.

After the round-robin play, eight squads will advance to the double-elimination playoffs.

Teams still interested to play in the league are asked to contact Quinn at 287-0318 for more information. Entrance fee is $10 per player for NMIVA member and $15 for non-member.
