CUC’s lack of knowledge, mismanagement, or incompetence
First off, I must make it clear that these ideas that I am putting forth are mine and mine alone.
If you read my first two letters to the editor, you will remember that I talked about the automatic reclosures on the power line. I was asking why they were removed. This week I went to CUC and offered to repair them (free of charge) if they would put them back in place. I was informed that the reason that they were removed was because they had one by one burned up. I do not know what happened but this I do know. For five years I took care of these reclosures. They were in just as good a condition when they were taken out of my care as they were when I first started taking care of them. This tells me that after they were taken out of my care, no one took care of them. I used to go out every three or four weeks and clean them and check the batteries. It is called preventive maintenance. If they had been taken cared of they would have not burnt out. Now we the ratepayers will have to pay the cost for CUC to buy new reclosures. It sounds to me that the reclosures get the same maintenance as the engines in the power plant. You tell me if this is the way to run a utility!
The Legislature (the good old boys who like to spend our money)
Most of the people are blaming the Governor for the mess we are in. They can make some real good arguments to that point. But the truth of the matter is that this mess started years ago because the Legislature did not do their job. It is the responsibility of the Legislature to keep the government spending within the amount of money that they have. But it seems that the good old boys think they can just keep on spending money whether they have it or not. Every working person on the island knows that many times we have to decide what is necessary and what we want. Many times the things that we just want we cannot have because the money has to go to what we need. If only the Legislature could figure this out.
Any person with any understanding of how business is run knew that when President Clinton signed the North America Free Trade Agreement the garment was dead. But what did the Legislature do? Instead of collecting the taxes that were due the island, they gave them every tax break in the book. Now we have residents who deserve to retire but cannot because the government did not pay the Retirement Fund what the law required them to. So I ask you, who was the Legislature working for: the local residents or the garment factories? You decide.
As you all know this is an election year. All the politicians are going to be coming out and tell all the wonderful things they are going to do for us. Well, I think we all know that as soon as they get re-elected they all forget all the things they promised and go back to the same old routine (What is in it for them?). I say that it is time for some new blood in the Legislature. So please use your vote wisely. Forget who you are related to and vote for the ones that will work for the people.
