Commonwealth Ports Authority continued its winning form on Thursday night as it routed unheralded Mayor’s Office, 21-9, to move to second place in the 2008 Budweiser Inter-Government /Business Softball League at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

Third baseman Jack Guerrero scored four runs in the first, third, sixth, and seventh innings to lead CPA’s offense.

Three other teammates, Mel Manahane, Byron Kaipat, and Ryan Sablan came up with three each, while Mark Toves, pitcher Donald Pangelinan, and catcher Peter Boria added two each and Mike Guerrero and Franks Roberts reached home plate once to help put their team in second place with a 10-1 record, behind league-leading and defending champion DCCA’s undefeated 10-0 record.

Kaipat scored the lone homerun of the night right in the top of the first inning that gave them a 4-0 lead.

He finished the game with three runs, five hits, and five RBIs.

CPA established an early 8-3 lead but Mayor’ office close the gap at 7-8 after the bottom third.

But Mayor’s Office never scored from then on with its string of fielding errors.

Fred Robert led the Mayor’s Office with two runs, one hit, and an RBI.

Five of his teammates were able to record one run each, including Donald Manalo in the first, pitcher John Guererro in the second, Joe Tudela, John Maratita, and Ernest Kani in the third but that did not help their team stop its slide. Mayor’s Office is now in 19th place in the 20-team field with a 1-11 card.

In the first game of the night, Legislature also improved its record to 8-4 by blanking Customs, 4-0.

First baseman Fonz Tarope scored runs in the first and fourth to lead Legislature’s batters, while second baseman Dennis Neskabei had one in the first and outfielder Ben Camacho in the seventh.

The loss was Customs’ ninth in 11 outings and the team is groping for form in the bottom of the team standings at 18th place.
