GCA opens COPSSA caging with win
Grace Christian Academy clawed its way to victory at Mt. Carmel School’s home court Thursday to open its title campaign in the 2009 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association basketball league on a bright note.
The visiting Lady Eagles shrugged off the Knights’ wild cheering crowd, as the former completely dominated the game and went on to post a 32-12 win.
The two teams traded occasional shots in the first half of play, which ended with a 12-8 Eagles’ lead.
Janela Revilla made a couple of two pointers for the Eagles, while Kaylani Lebria and Carey Demapan scored each from underneath for the Knights to make it 16-12.
Then it was an all Eagles’ show after those exchanges, as the Lady Eagles broke loose with a 16-0 run to wrap-up the morale-boosting win.
Kallie O’Connor scored six points in that amazing run and finished the game with eight points, same total of Chezka De Luna.
Other scores for the Eagles were Kristine Molina and Revilla with six points each, while Crystalline Cristobal and Angela Mamaril added two points each.
It was also a good start for GCA’s first time coach John Manglona, who credited the win to his players’ run-and-gun style of play.
“I think that the key to this win was that our players are in shape. Because of this they could run faster than the players of the other team,” he said.
Manglona also said his team played more aggressively, especially in offense.
The Lady Eagles finished second to Saipan international School last season.
Lebria finished with eight points, while Amy Taylor and Demapan chipped in two points each for the Knights’ losing effort.
Completing the Eagles’ roster this year are Anastasia Schweiger, Kahra Atalig, Crystalline Cristobal, Kallie O’Connor, Kristine Molina, Aira Jaye Batallones, Janela Revilla, Jimaela Ham, Rinel Chargualaf, Leona Pangelinan, Julie Muna, Angela Mamaril, Abby Dimaano, Julie Muna, Angeline Velasco, and Chezka De Luna.
The Knights are composed of Amy Taylor, Skalan Yamada, Jazmine Che, Thomasa Naraja, Shaniah Alvarez, Rikki Kautz, Chelsea Bartolo, Carey Demapan, Kimberley Sablan, Kaylani Lebria, and Rachel Borja.
