All past and present Commissioners of the CNMI Public School System made their historic first meeting yesterday at the Chamolinian Room of the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

The Commissioners (in order) are Henry Sablan, Dr. Elizabeth Rechebei, former Rep. William Torres, Dr. Rita H. Inos, Dr. David Borja, and Dr. Rita A. Sablan (current).

Also present during the meeting were members of the Board of Education headed by Lucy Blanco-Maratita and legal counsel.

Board member Jonas Manibusan Barcinas, who is the Dandan Elementary School principal, said the purpose of the meeting is to share the hope for a better PSS for the CNMI’s children.

He said this is particularly important due to the current challenges and economic crisis that the CNMI is confronting.

Each former commissioners gave insights about these challenges in the educational front and each commended the current commissioner for organizing the meeting.

Henry Sablan, the first PSS Commissioner, stressed the need to be flexible with the multi-cultural student population in the CNMI.

They also shared some of their experiences during their stint at the helm of PSS and how to improve the educational system.

“It is very historic because this is the first time ever that all the six PSS Commissioners gathered in a meeting like this,” Barcinas said.
