The moment the volunteers set up their medical paraphernalia, personnel at the Saipan International Airport began lining up to avail of the free health screening—the first of the year.

The Community Guidance Center provided the staff for the health screening that was jointly organized by the Marianas Health Services, CNMI Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and the Pacific Wellness Center

“This is an activity that we are doing on a monthly basis. We are doing it in different areas and in different government offices,” said MHS administrator Marlene C. Cruz.

Cruz explained that they intentionally set up the screening in high traffic areas where there are a lot of people coming in.

Except for yesterday’s activity, the screening will be held every first Thursday of the month.

The next stop will be at the Department of Labor and Immigration offices on Feb.5.

“This is open to everybody and not just the people working in these offices,” Cruz said.

Patient will be asked to register and fill out forms that will give health volunteers some basic information about the patient.

Some of the free services they are offering are blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI check-ups.

Usually, the patients must undergo fasting the night before the check-up.

Results of the screening in each month will be put into a database and presented to the appropriate agency for reference.

The culmination of these activities will be during the proclamation month in October.

“That time, we would be able to get a real picture of the number of people with high blood pressure and high blood sugar and other information,” Cruz said.

She said similar activities will also be held on Rota and Tinian.
