Clarification

Several issues were taken out of context in the story Marpi homestead applicants surpass number of lots. They are:

1. Total number of homestead lots on Saipan between Koblerville, Capital Hill and Marpi is 1,478. There are 3,400 residential homestead applicants.

2. Homestead recipients for Tinian and Rota would be allowed use of a septic tank per specifications by the Division of Environmental Quality and after an inspection of the soil is completed. Neither island has a sewer system.

3. DPL will extend the period required of homestead applicants to build the first family home from three to six years for Tinian and Rota. We take into full view the difficult economic times and the extension is a realistic approach at this juncture.

4. A lot of the applicants from Tinian and Rota are self-employed, thus the decision to accommodate this situation. The gradual building of the first family home fits this situation realistically.

The issuance of Tinian homesteads is likely to occur during the first half of March when all pertinent administrative and requisite documents are completed. DPL would be issuing an Invitation for Bids for the Koblerville Homestead development before month’s end. Thank you for the opportunity to clarify these issues.
