The Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands will begin a series of tryouts at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Jan. 18 for the CNMI Women’s National Team that will be competing in the FIBA Oceania Basketball Tournament this year.

The first tryout will start at 10am with BANMI president Elias Rangamar asking interested participants to come in proper basketball attire.

The trials are open to all female cagers who want to showcase their basketball skills and talents and represent the CNMI in the regional caging.

Saipan will be hosting the Oceania tournament in June.

Besides the CNMI, others FIBA Oceania members likely to compete in this year’s caging are Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Guam, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and American Samoa.

FIBA Oceania and BANMI are looking at holding games for the regional meet at the Marianas High School Gymnasium and at the Ada Gymnasium.

The MHS gym will undergo minor repairs for the tournament, while FIBA Oceania is asking BANMI and other members of the local organizing committee to have the Ada gym undergo a major facelift to meet the standard for hosting a high-caliber tournament like the Oceania caging.

Rangamar in previous interviews with Saipan Tribune said they are working with both the public and private sectors to solicit support for the major renovations of the Ada Gym.

In March, FIBA Oceania secretary general Steve Smith is expected to visit Saipan anew to check on the venues and get updates from the BANMI regarding preparations for the biggest basketball tournament that the CNMI will be hosting.

Smith was on Saipan late October last year for the initial inspection of the facilities.
