Whether it be suddenly disintegrating shoes in XTERRA Japan, an incoming tornado and foot blisters in Ironman Kansas, and stomach flu during the XTERRA World Championships, Mieko Carey always manages to cross the finish line with a big smile on her face.

Even as she dominated local races in 2008, Carey made her mark by taking part in conquering the three aforementioned off-island triathlons last year.

The 2008 XTERRA World Championships was the biggest feather in her cap last year, as Carey finally able to accomplish her dream of standing on the podium following a third place finish in the women’s 30-34 age group with a time of 3:53:38 last Oct. 26 in Maui.

“XTERRA World Championship was my biggest accomplishment. I wanted to finish on the podium and I did. I trained and focused just on that race for three months. I stopped partying and drinking for a while which is almost a bigger challenge than the Maui course! I had a fun race. I used all of my power as I got sick during the race. I was fortunate enough to do many races this year.

“I really concentrated on triathlons this year. Guam XTERRA and Ironman Kansas were new experiences for me. The Hell of the Marianas was my first road bike race. I was very surprised and happy at how I did. Now I feel like 2008 is finished successfully. All of the challenges I faced this year made me stronger than the past year and will help me in the future. I am excited about racing in 2009 and I hope my shoes don’t break! Thanks to all of my training partners and friends who helped me during training and racing,” said Mieko of her adventures in 2008.
