The Department of Public Safety Traffic Section announced yesterday that it would be putting up three sobriety checkpoints in designated areas on New Year’s Eve.

Police would be setting up the first checkpoint in front of the Multi-Purpose Building along Beach Road in Susupe from 7:30pm to 8:45pm for northbound motorists.

The second setup would be also along Beach Road in Chalan Lau Lau located in front of the intersection of B&R Auto Shop but this time for southbound motorists. The checkpoint would be from 10:30pm to 11:45pm.

The third checkpoint would be along 2W Highway in Chalan Laulau in front of PTI (southbound outer lane). This will start at about 3am and will end at 4:15am.

Each checkpoint would last at least one hour and 15 minutes.

DPS said this is part of the 3D program, which attempts to deter and detect impaired driving and to ensure that all vehicle occupants are protected.

Traffic officers would also be conducting highway criminal interdictions, saturation patrols, aggressive driver interdictions, and laser activities.

For more information, contact Sgt. Paul Ogumoro or Officer Eric David at 664-9084-5 or fax 664-9086.

DPS also conducted a sobriety checkpoint during Christmas Eve. There is no available report yet of the results of the sobriety check.

Ogumoro said, however, that it was generally peaceful during the holidays.

He said the motorists seem to be observing traffic rules and regulations.
