As predicted, overtime for the employees of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has decreased since September when the Aggreko generators come online.

CUC executive director Antonio Muna had predicted as much in a July letter to the lLgislature explaining where funding for the emergency generators would come from. Based on CUC calculations, the utility believed it could save $308,012 a month in overtime and non-personnel costs associated with having to implement power outages, as well as in fuel and lube costs entailed by using existing, less efficient engines.

Overtime was consistently high during August and September, when brownouts and blackouts were at their worst. During the three pay periods from Aug. 16 to Sept. 13, CUC paid employees $44,689, $50,315 and $53,567 respectively in overtime. Since the Sept. 27 pay period, the highest overtime expense was $33,495.

From the Dec. 22, 2007 pay period to the Nov. 22, 2008 pay period, CUC’s total payroll cost was $10,740,807. Of that, 63.1 percent or $6,776,802 went to regular pay while 9.5 percent or $1,024,130 went to overtime pay. Another 27.1 percent or $2,910,685 went to employer’s contributions and0.3 percent of $27,466 went to retro pay.
