Villanueva upends Rengiil to win Monday 8-ball
Veteran cue artist Rolly Villanueva outlasted lady pool player Mei Rengiil to win USS Peleliu Club’s Monday 8-Ball Tournament.
Villanueva won $25, Rengiil $15, and Ed Manucdoc $10 for third place.
Late entries caused the contest to begin well after its scheduled 8pm kickoff.
Villanueva moved to the top of the winners’ bracket by fighting off Ken Phillips, Taylor Watanabe, and Manucdoc.
Watanabe beat John Mongami, Rengiil topped Annie Tesiro, Manucdoc edged Ron Chisato, and Rose Phillips surprised Dean Santos in other first-round games. Manucdoc also sent Rengiil and Rose Phillips to the losers’ bracket.
Chisato came back through the losers’ bracket with wins over Santos and Watanabe, but couldn’t get past Rengiil. She eliminated Rose Phillips, Mongami, and Chisato and took the rematch from Manucdoc in marching to the finals against Villanueva.
Mongami eliminated Ken Phillips, while Santos did the same to Tesiro.
“The Monday 8-ball contests are meant to be fun tournaments,” said Ken Phillips. “That’s why the entry fee is only $5. It’s good practice and easy on the pocketbook.”
“A lot of players have asked for a repeat of the Marianas Turkey Shoot, so we’re going to hold a Christmas tournament on Dec. 23 starting at 7 pm. The entry fee will be $15 again, so there will be cash prizes of $120, $75, and $45 for a 16 player field,” he added.
There will also be raffle prizes and giveaways, but the details are still being worked out.
