Hermès leather craftsman to demonstrate skill on Saipan
Hermès Boutique announced yesterday the upcoming arrival of a master craftsman from Paris, France, who will be here on Saipan to demonstrate the art of making a signature shoulder bag by hand.
Boutique manager Faye HJ Jang said the master craftsman would arrive on Dec. 27 in time for a nine-day stint at the DFS Galleria where he will share with the public the unique craftsmanship practiced in Paris workshops.
Jang said these kinds of workshops by the Paris-based company have been going on for over 170 years.
She said this would be an opportunity for Hermès’ valued customers to see how the master craftsman makes a bag at the boutique from Dec. 27 to Jan. 5.
The demonstrations are set at 11am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm.
Jang also said customers who have Hermès bags that need to be repaired could bring them to the master craftsman. The bags will be brought to Paris and the original craftsman of the bag would personally fix it.
Jang explained that every Hermès product has a patch that identifies the name and code of the maker of that particular product.
Last year, a master craftsman from Paris also did the same event here on Saipan.
However, Jang said she is not sure who will be coming this time because Christmas time is a peak season for leather craftsmen around the world.
Jang said it takes about 17 days for a master craftsman to finish a leather bag because of the intricate stitching process.
The most expensive item currently on display at the boutique is worth $26,000. It is made of crocodile skin with diamond designs and accessories.
