Students learn about making smart choices
Students at three high schools learned yesterday about road safety in an interactive presentation conducted by firefighter-paramedics.
The presentation focused on wearing seatbelts and reducing underage drinking and driving, as well as making other smart choices.
The two paramedics, members of Stay Alive From Education, used medical equipment to show the juniors and seniors at Kagman High School, Marianas High School and Saipan Southern High School what happens following a trauma incident. The students watched as the paramedics used real medical equipment and another student to demonstrate what can happen when someone gets into an accident.
“Actually seeing a peer going through it makes more of an impact,” said Vince Easevoli, one of the paramedics.
Anheuer-Busch InBev and its local wholesaler, Marianas Pacific Distributors, sponsored the Street Smart program. The program is presented to juniors and seniors on Saipan every two years. More than 500 students took part in the presentation this year.
Joseph Camacho, marketing manager for MarPac, said the community needs to be educated about making smart safety decisions, and the presentations helps with that.
“It brings real people with real life experience,” he said.
Keilani Aguon, a student at KHS, said the presentation was informative.
“It showed what can actually happen,” she said.
In a statement, Tom Shimizu, Ambros inc. and MarPac Inc. general manager, said, “Many of our employees are parents too, and we all want our children to make smart choices, including wearing their seat belts and no drinking when they’re underage. The paramedics’ real-life stories have a powerful long-lasting impact that encourages teens to be responsible about the choices they make.”
