Aussie envoy makes first official visit to NMI

The Australian ambassador to Micronesia will make her first official visit to the Northern Marianas today.

Susan Cox will meet with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial at the governor’s office at 10am. Her four-day visit includes calls on Senate President Pete P. Reyes, acting Attorney General Gregory Baka, Saipan Chamber of Commerce executive director Kyle Calabrese, Homeland Security Secretary Patrick Tenorio, and Delegate-elect Gregorio “Kilili” Sablan.

Cox is the ambassador of Australia to the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. She also serves as consul general to Guam and the Northern Marianas.

A career officer with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Cox was appointed to her current position late last year. She succeeded Corinne Denise Tomkinson, who visited Saipan in June 2006 and September 2007.

According to the Australia’s DFAT website, prior to her appointment to Micronesia, Cox served as director in her country’s Post Security Task Force. Cox has served as deputy high commissioner in Port Vila from 1998 to 2001 and as vice-consul in Noumea from 1990 to 1993. She has also served in Cairo.

In Canberra, Cox has held a range of positions including executive officer and later, director of the Consular Policy and Crisis Management Section (2003 to 2006), manager of the Consular Coordination Unit (2002 to 2003), executive ifficer in the Multilateral South Pacific and Resources Section (1995 to 1998) and the Bilateral Pacific and Political Section (1993 to 1995).

Cox was awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia for her role in the management of the response to the Bali bombings in October 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Canberra and was awarded a University medal in 1997. She speaks French and Bislama.
