The Legislative Bureau hopes to save $40,000 by cutting two full-time positions on Rota and Tinian.

The two employees—one on each island—will have their last day of work on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, according to a Nov. 28 memorandum issued by LB director Glenna SP Reyes.

In a telephone interview, Reyes said the bureau decided not to renew the employees’ contracts in an effort to streamline operations. “It’s unfortunate, but we have to do it. We have evaluated the structure of the bureau, and these are positions that we believe we can do without. The bulk of the [bureau’s] work is on Saipan,” she said.

She added that it would be more cost-effective for the bureau to send staff to the islands whenever the Senate or House of Representatives holds a session there than to keep full-time employees on the payroll.

As Reyes said in the memorandum, “The bureau will continue to provide the services of session support staff for all legislative sessions, as well as services of the legal counsel and sergeant-at-arms for all legislative public hearings held in the respective islands.”
