$400K allotted for Rota projects
A bill earmarking $400,000 from the interest earned on Commonwealth Development Authority bonds is now law.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial on Thanksgiving Day signed into law House Bill 16-186, appropriating $250,000 of the interest income for perimeter fencing and other infrastructure improvements at Sinapalo Elementary School, and $150,000 for new tractors for the Department of Lands and Natural Resources on Rota.
Rep. Victor Hocog sponsored the bill, with House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho signing on as co-sponsor. The House of Representatives passed the measure during a session on Rota on Oct. 31, 2008. The Senate approved on Nov. 6, 2008.
The funds had originally been appropriated for Rota’s much-delayed Route 100 paving project. The road project involves paving the 12-kilometer highway to provide an alternate connection between the villages of Sinapalo and Songsong. It has been delayed due to design changes due to typhoon damage and the default of a former contractor. In addition, the Federal Highway Administration has required the local government to obtain title to private lands that would be affected by the road project before starting the construction. The government has no funding to acquire these lands.
