Asiana Airlines soon will launch a new thrice-weekly flight between Osaka, Japan and Saipan.

The new service will begin Dec. 19.

The service will be part of a new code-sharing operation between Asiana and All-Nippon Airways. ANA will place its flight code on Asiana’s service, allowing ANA to bring Saipan back into its network for the first time in 16 years.

Each flight will have 177 seats, for a total of 531 seats each week.

“Added seats to the destination is always welcome. We welcome the added seats,” said Perry Tenorio, Marianas Visitors Authority managing director.

The current state of the Japanese economy is a concern, but hopefully Osaka can support the additional seats each week, he said.

Frequent flyer members of either airline will be able to accrue and redeem mileage on the code-sharing flights.

Also on Dec. 19, Asiana will add its flight code to ANA’s domestic flights, linking Kansai with Sapporo, Fukuoka and Kagoshima.

Yesterday, Asiana and ANA began a code-sharing operation between Kansai Airport and Gimpo Airport in Seoul.
