As a travel bureau, you know you’ve sold your destination when a magazine editor wants to come back on a personal visit when the assignment is over.

MOMO Magazine, distributed to banks and other financial institutions throughout Japan, recently sent editor and photographer Yumi Yamanaka to Saipan on a travel feature story. From the time of her arrival on Nov. 17, 2008, Yamanaka interviewed local and Japanese senior citizens and conducted photo shoots at various tourist sites and facilities attractive to active senior visitors from Japan.

Somewhere between the sunsets, the garden strolling and sampling her first fried ice-cream, Yamanaka decided there was more to the island and its neighbors than she could discover in a few days. “This place is so interesting I want to come back and vacation here,” Yamanaka said before returning to Japan a short three days after her arrival.

The Marianas Visitors Authority hopes the readers of MOMO Magazine will feel the same allure. MOMO Magazine, published through Pro-vision, is a color glossy magazine with articles on culture, travel, food, and health targeting active senior citizens. The free, six-page MOMO article that is the focus of Yamanaka’s tour will be publish in February 2009.

“We are pleased to help Ms. Yamanaka discover what Saipan, Tinian and Rota have to offer active seniors and other visitors, and we welcome them to come and discover our islands for themselves,” said Perry Tenorio, managing director of MVA. “MOMO has a circulation of 300,000 copies per issue, so we hope our invitation will be extended broadly.”

Yamanaka’s tour of Saipan was supported by in-kind contributions from several MVA members: Hafadai Beach Hotel, Revolving 360 Restaurant, Oleai Beach Bar & Grill, Saipan Botanical Garden, Stars & Stripes, and Kinpachi Restaurant. The value of the MOMO Magazine ad is estimated at $68,571US. (MVA)
