The House of Representatives has urged the Department of Public Works to move fast on locally funded infrastructure projects for Saipan.

In a resolution, the House members told DPW Secretary Diego Songsong “to be innovative and accommodating when expediting these projects and in consultation with the respective precinct representatives.”

The lawmakers noted that although funding has been provided, many road paving, facility renovations, and other public facility improvements have yet to be completed, or even started.

They said road projects in particular should be completed immediately, as the CNMI government spends huge amounts of money every year fixing coral roads. The paving of coral roads and installing drainage systems on such roads, the legislators said, will significantly reduce the amount of funds spent on continuous repairs and improve the island’s infrastructure.

The House members also cited the economic impact of infrastructure development. “With the current state of the CNMI’s economy, it is necessary to ensure that money for capital improvement projects are spent to spur the local economy,” they said.
