Comments sought on As Matuis resort plan
The Legislature is seeking public comments on a Korean firm’s plans to build a multi-million dollar resort in As Matuis.
The House Committee on Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Resources, Economic Development and Programs will hold public hearings next month to let local residents have their say on the proposed land lease by Flame Sako Resort Hotel and Spa.
The public hearings will be held on Dec. 9, 2008, 6:30pm, at GTC Elementary School in San Roque, and on Dec. 10, 2008, 6:30pm, at the Multi Purpose Center in Susupe.
Written comments may also be submitted to the offices of Rep. Ramon Tebuteb and Sen. Jude Hofchneider, chairmen of the respective committees.
Flame Tree Sako, headed by president Kang Dae Sik, wants to lease 10.9 hectares of property located immediately north of Palms Resort in As Matuis for the construction of a nine-floor, 357-room resort. The project carries an estimated price tag of $50 million to $60 million, according to the Department of Public Lands.
The new resort plans come after DPL earlier this year canceled a lease with Win DNC, a company that also had plans to build a resort in the same area as the Sako proposal. DPL said the company had violated its lease and failed to provide the necessary “good faith” financing for the project.
The Constitution grants DPL the authority to dispose of public lands. The constitutional limit to a leasehold interest in public lands is 25 years including renewal rights. An extension of up to 15 years may be given upon the approval by three-fourths of the members of the Legislature.
