In the observance of World’s AIDS Day on Monday, Dec. 1, the Department of Public Health is reminding everyone of the importance of undergoing a regular blood test to prevent the spread of HIV, the virus that causes the dreaded disease.

Rapid HIV testing is now available free of charge at Family Planning clinics on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, which destroys the body’s immune system.

“Normally, your immune system helps you fight off illness. When your immune system fails you can become very sick and can die,” explained Arielle Buyum, RN, BSN, MPH, Family Planning Program Manager of DPH. He said HIV kills the cells that help the body fight off infection and disease.

The rapid HIV test is done on the lining of the mouth so no blood draw is needed. The test takes 20 minutes, so results are available that same visit. “It is safe, easy, and quick,” Buyum said.

Aside from HIV testing, the program also provides education services onsite at its Family Planning-funded clinics throughout the CNMI.

“Now family planning services may play a larger role in people knowing their HIV status to prevent the transmission of HIV to sexual partners as well as transmission during pregnancy,” Buyum stressed.

She said few people know their HIV status and this lack of knowledge may create a setting for the spread of HIV.

“The family planning program is working with the HIV/STD program to increase the number of people who are aware of their HIV status, allow HIV-positive individuals to obtain necessary medical care and treatment to extend their lives, and allow HIV-positive individuals to make decisions to reduce the risk of transmission, including safer sex practices and contraceptive methods,” Buyum said.

The onsite testing aims to maximize the effectiveness and impact of services by providing complete reproductive health care that addresses individuals’ dual risks of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy.

Testing is currently available at the Southern Community Wellness Center (664-4850); CHC Women’s Clinic (234-8950); and the Adolescent Health Center at Marianas High School (237-3283); all three clinics are located on Saipan.

The contact number at the Tinian Health Center is 433-9263 while the Rota Health Center is 532-9461.
