Grace Christian Academy’s Dae Won Jeon received a fitting gift for his 18th birthday—a most valuable player award.

The Eagles spiker was named MVP in the 2008-2009 Coalition of Private Schools Volleyball League during the award ceremony Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Jeon celebrated his birthday on the same day the Eagles claimed the high school division title beating Mt. Carmel in the finals, 25-11, 25-10.

The 6-foot-1 Jeon led the Eagles to an unbeaten season in the high school volleyball league and outsmarted the Knights frontliners in the title game.

Jeon received a trophy for his feat and his teammates chanted “Happy Birthday Dae Won” when he got his award.

League organizer Becky Covarrubias, who was a former GCA coach, handed the trophy to Jeon and other individual awardees of the 2008 season.

Also receiving awards were the MVPs of each school. The list include William Salazar of Calvary Christian Academy, GCA’s James Sakamoto, Marianas Baptist Academy’s Jenny Sakamoto, Seventh Day Adventists’ Kono Remeliik, Saipan International School-Blue’s Amber Roberts, and SIS-Green’s Henry Lee.

SDA took the Sportsmanship Award.

This year’s high school volleyball league drew seven teams. GCA finished on top of the regular season with a 12-0 record and was seeded first in the players.

MBA was ranked second, followed by, Mt. Carmel, SIS-Blue, SDA, CCA, and SIS-Green.

The Eagles drew a bye in the first round of the playoffs, while the six remaining teams battled for the three semis tickets.

SDA defeated SIS-Blue in the quarterfinals, joining MBA and Mt. Carmel in the semis. The Knights topped the Calvary Sharks, while the MBA Storms whipped SIS-Green.

In the semifinals, the Eagles defeated the SDA in straight sets, while Mt. Carmel needed three sets to thwart MBA.
