Arts council to hold first music festival on Saipan
In an effort to revive and promote the sounds that people in the Marianas are familiar with, the Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture will be holding the first ever Music Festival on Saipan.
CCAC acting director Ramona Rebuenog said this pilot project is tentatively set for the first week of December. She said they are planning to hold the event at the Garapan Fishing Base.
Cecilia Taitano-Celes, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary, said they would make sure that this event would involve the legendary as well as current artists in the CNMI.
“This would showcase how the music of the Marianas really sound. We are coordinating this with the Division of Youth Services since we will be tapping young singers to be strongly involved in this activity,” Taitano-Celes said.
She said this is an opportunity for them to perform live in front of an audience.
“It’s an opportunity to break the ice. Such event would encourage them to become professionals,” Taitano-Celes said.
Some of the legendary musicians in the CNMI include Rep. Candy Taman and three members of the board of directors of the Arts Council, David Peter, Joseph Diaz and Joe Limes. She said this would be a time to remember their talents and the chance for upcoming musicians to take center stage.
“It’s part of promoting the Pacific culture but it would be all about music in the Marianas. This is a challenge because we want to know if it will attract attention,” Taitano-Celes said.
She said they would be allowing vendors to sell their products at the Festival but such items would be strictly about music and would be limited.
The Council is also planning to conduct music courses in the future. Information about this would be disseminated during the festival.
